Student Council

Our School Council is a democratically elected group of students from each year.

The purpose of the School Council is to represent your views and opinions on a variety of issues and to be a forum for active and constructive student input into the daily life of the school community.

Our School Council benefits the whole school, students and adults, as it gives opportunities for you to communicate your feelings and opinions to teachers and support staff as well as influencing decisions that are made.

The aims of the School Council are:

To promote your views as students through discussion about issues raised by students and staff which to affect the life of the school both in the present and in the future.
To help the people who make decisions in the school understand and respect your point of view.
To give you an opportunity to understand and participate in a democratic process.
To enable you to participate effectively in school and debate and address issues of concern to you both in and out of school.
To give you a real say in how you learn and achieve.
To undertake projects that will improve the quality of the school.

The School Council meet every four weeks on Thursday lunchtime in F8.

The Student Council are very influential in school and have made the following requests and decisions last year:

Students said… The school has…

…they wanted more say about who were the Head Boy and Head Girl.

… introduced full democratic voting for the Head boy and girl.  Potential candidates speak to the electorate in assemblies and then the whole school votes for their favoured candidates using official voting methods.

…they wanted to wear blazers as part of their school uniform.

…conducted various school votes, consulted with parents, the blazer has been introduced in September 2016 for the entire student population.

…they wanted to choose the activities they participated in for rewards afternoons.

…enabled students to suggest the activities that are available for rewards afternoon.  Students also select their favourite three activities.

…all students should be allowed to use their mobiles in their locker areas.

…asked students to create sanctions for mobile phone use and now allowed students to use them at breaks and lunchtimes.

…that they should not receive behaviour points for C1 and C2 warnings.

…now removed behaviour points for C1 and C2 warnings.

…they would like to choose the school bell if they are the top attending form. They would like to be more competitive. If the school bell throughout the day if not possible then the end of the day bell.

…allowed the top attending form to choose the music bell on Fridays.

…students, especially in KS3, would like to have more career conventions and have more literature around the school.

…asked Mrs Hogan to look at more ways to expand and improve the careers convention.  Mrs Hogan has already planned an additional convention next year.

…they would like to design the front cover for the student planners.

…used the winning student design on the new student planners as democratically voted for by the students.

Charity Work:

The Student Council also do a lot of charity work.  Last year’s charity was the RSPCA and students also raised money for one of their peers who needed an adapted bath.
Through a student organised and led Summer Fete, the students raised £400 for these causes.  The students will again vote for this year’s charities and events.
